TSSAA Football: 2022 Division I Class 5A

Basic Information

Each row represents a team, and each column a place. The content of the box indicates how the team can earn that place or any higher place. In particular, the symbol ▼ indicates that the team cannot get that place, while ☆ indicates a clinched place, and «« means that the possibilities are the same for that place as the next higher (in other words, the team cannot finish in that exact place, but can finish either higher or lower).

Four teams per region qualify. The first three rounds are played among teams in a single section (pair of regions), with cross-region games from the start. These games are hosted by the team finishing higher in its region, or the even-region team (in even years) if the two are equal. In the semifinals, the Region 1/2 and 5/6 winners visit the 3/4 and 7/8 winners respectively (the opposite applies in odd years). A top-two finish earns home field in the first round, while the champion has home field for two rounds.

Tiebreakers

  1. Head-to-head (applies only to a team beating all others in the tie)
  2. Overall wins.
  3. First-tier opponents (defined as Wins ≥ Losses, i. e. .500 or better) played.
  4. First-tier opponents defeated.
  5. Total opponents’ wins.
  6. Total opponents’ losses (fewer is better).
  7. Random selection.

One team at a time is selected; all others then begin again at the top.

By the same token, if (for example) two teams remain tied after a step that eliminates a third team, those two restart at step 1.
